CommView for Wifi can capture and analyze packages on wireless networks. This can be very useful for IT professionals who need to control WLAN traffic. The application has a straightforward interface even though it is not intended for the common user but WLAN administrators, security professionals and network programmers.
The application includes a network scanner which will find and identify all the access points and hosts at range. After the scan has been completed, you can easily set the band and channel to capture. Moreover, you can save the results of the scan to a file. Then, a series of tabs will display current information about the selected channel, including nodes, channels, latest IP connections, packets, logging, rules and alarms.
Two different types of rules allow you to filter packages based on their type, port number or MAC address. Likewise, you can create alarms when a significant event happens. These events include suspicious packets, high bandwidth utilization and unknown addresses.
CommView for Wifi comes with two types of license: the standard and the VoIP licenses. Besides the above mentioned functions, the VoIP license will allow you to capture and analyze Internet telephony events, such as call flow, signaling sessions, registrations, media streams and errors.
To sum up, CommView for Wifi will probably come in very handy to IP professionals in charge of controlling network usage and traffic. Unfortunately, it does not support all types of wireless cards.
